Pongal is an ancient Indian festival of harvest and it was believed that God Indra, the king of the gods, created Pongal to commemorate his victory over disease, drought and death. A Vedic prayer starts this celebration at sunrise on December 22nd, and it’s also known as Makara Sankranthi. It’s believed that this day marks the end of one cosmic cycle and beginning of another.

The name for Pongal comes from the Tamil word for “to boil” or “to bubble.” It is held on the day when there is no sun in the sky because it is believed that God Varuna created a pot full of milk to boil at this time so that he could create “the world without fear”. The people who traditionally celebrate Pongal are Tamils but plenty of people across India
